SpaceJoists
SpaceJoist pioneers EC5 compliance
ITW Industry are the first and only open web floor joist system to release Eurocode 5 (EC5) compliant software, before the BS codes are due to be withdrawn in 2010. Alpine's "VIEW" software employs the improved design method of EC5 for engineering SpaceJoist. The SpaceJoist system, part of a range of open web floor joists from ITW Industry's Alpine brand, allows for service runs within the floor space without the need for drilling or notching, eliminating typical errors that incur costly remedial work.
General floor design has evolved during the BS-standards' lifetime, while EC5 has benefited from a more objective, methodical drafting process from scratch. Three specific checks, rather than the blanket 12 /14mm maximum deflection check of the BS standards, have been introduced to limit undue vibration in floors: i) fundamental frequency of vibration, ii) footstep induced vibrations and iii) heel impact checks. Footstep induced vibration checks have received many years of investigation, resulting in more predictable performance. In some cases, greater spans can be achieved as a result. The design method of EC5 is recognised by the NHBC.
In addition to SpaceJoist design, the Alpine software development team are using their knowledge of EC5 to ensure a smooth transition when the roof truss and FloorTrus open web joist systems will follow suit.
